Background of the Study

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, particularly among young adults. In young people, SCD is often associated with undiagnosed cardiac conditions, such as arrhythmias, cardiomyopathy, or congenital heart defects (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). Despite its significant impact on public health, SCD in young adults is often preventable through early detection, timely interventions, and education on lifestyle changes (Ezekiel & Balogun, 2024). In Osun State, cases of sudden cardiac death among young adults remain a major concern, with many cases attributed to a lack of awareness, delayed diagnosis, and inadequate preventive measures (Afolabi & Olayemi, 2023).

Nursing interventions have been shown to play a vital role in the prevention of sudden cardiac death, particularly through health education, early screening for risk factors, lifestyle counseling, and patient monitoring. Nurses can educate young adults about recognizing symptoms of heart disease, encourage physical activity, and promote adherence to healthy diets and stress management techniques (Ogunbayo et al., 2024). However, research on the specific impact of nursing interventions in preventing SCD in young adults in Osun State remains scarce, highlighting the need for focused evaluation.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in preventing sudden cardiac death in young adults in Osun State, assessing the role of nurses in early detection, education, and lifestyle management.

Statement of the Problem

Sudden cardiac death remains a significant cause of mortality among young adults in Osun State. While preventive measures, including early detection of risk factors and lifestyle modifications, can reduce the occurrence of SCD, there is limited research on the specific role of nursing interventions in mitigating this risk. This study seeks to evaluate how nursing interventions can help prevent sudden cardiac death in young adults, focusing on education, lifestyle changes, and early screening practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nursing interventions in preventing sudden cardiac death in young adults in Osun State.
  2. To assess the role of nurses in educating young adults on the risk factors for sudden cardiac death.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in implementing preventive measures for sudden cardiac death among young adults.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are nursing interventions in preventing sudden cardiac death in young adults in Osun State?
  2. What role do nurses play in educating young adults about the risk factors for sudden cardiac death?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in implementing prevention strategies for sudden cardiac death among young adults?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nursing interventions significantly reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death in young adults in Osun State.
  2. Nurse-led education programs improve awareness of the risk factors for sudden cardiac death among young adults.
  3. There are significant barriers to implementing nursing interventions aimed at preventing sudden cardiac death in young adults.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on young adults in Osun State, particularly those at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Limitations include possible variations in the effectiveness of interventions due to differences in the resources available across healthcare facilities.

Definitions of Terms

  • Sudden cardiac death (SCD): An unexpected death due to a sudden cardiac event, often caused by arrhythmias or other undiagnosed cardiac conditions.
  • Nursing interventions: Actions taken by nurses to prevent, manage, or treat medical conditions in patients.
  • Young adults: Individuals aged 18–35 years, who are typically in the transition phase from adolescence to adulthood.
